Programme Aims and Objectives
The Master of Science in Applied Neuroscience [MSc(ApN)] programme aims to cultivate a new generation of interdisciplinary professionals who can bridge the gap between cutting-edge brain science and real-world societal and commercial applications. The overarching goal is to equip students from diverse academic backgrounds with the theoretical depth, methodological rigour, and practical acumen to become leaders and innovators in high-growth sectors. The programme is committed to fostering a critical, ethical, and solution-oriented mindset, preparing graduates to translate complex neuroscientific knowledge into tangible value and drive evidence-based decision-making in their chosen fields.
To achieve its aims, the MSc(ApN) is designed to meet the following key objectives:
- To Provide Foundational and Advanced Knowledge: To deliver a comprehensive curriculum covering the core principles of cognitive, affective, and behavioural neuroscience, alongside advanced knowledge in specialised applied domains such as neuromarketing and neurolinguistics.
- To Develop Methodological and Analytical Expertise: To provide rigorous, hands-on training in contemporary neuroscientific research methods (e.g., EEG, fNIRS, eye-tracking) and advanced data analysis techniques, enabling students to design, execute, and interpret application-focused studies.
- To Foster Applied Problem-Solving Skills: To challenge students to apply neuroscientific theories and tools to solve complex, authentic problems within their chosen specialisation, moving beyond academic exercises to industry-relevant and clinically meaningful challenges.
- To Cultivate Professional and Communication Competencies: To develop students' ability to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly and persuasively to diverse stakeholders—including academic peers, business executives, clinical practitioners, and the public—and to navigate the ethical considerations inherent in applied neuroscience.
- To Promote an Interdisciplinary and Innovative Mindset: To create a dynamic learning environment where students from different fields (e.g., business, psychology, linguistics, engineering) collaborate, fostering cross-disciplinary thinking and innovative approaches to problem-solving.
Programme Intended Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a systematic and critical understanding of the core theories, principles, and key findings in cognitive, affective, and social neuroscience, and be able to integrate this knowledge to explain complex human behaviours.
- Critically evaluate cutting-edge neuroscientific research, and independently design and execute methodologically sound, ethical research or application projects to address complex, real-world problems.
- Apply neuroscientific principles and techniques ethically and effectively within a specialised professional context (e.g., developing a neuromarketing strategy, designing a neurolinguistic intervention), and justify the chosen approach based on evidence.
- Translate and communicate complex neuroscientific concepts, methodologies, and findings effectively and persuasively to diverse audiences—including specialists, business leaders, policymakers, and the general public—to inform strategy, influence decisions, and promote scientific literacy.
Specialisation
The MSc(ApN) is designed with foresight, featuring two innovative specialisations:
- Neuromarketing and Business Management: This specialisation directly addresses the urgent need in the digital economy for professionals who can leverage neuroscientific insights to understand consumer behaviour, optimise user experience (UX), and enhance brand strategy—a domain largely absent from traditional business education.
- Neurolinguistics and Speech Pathology: Capitalising on the unique multilingual environment of Hong Kong, China. This specialisation explores the neural mechanisms of language acquisition, disorders, and rehabilitation, aligning perfectly with EdUHK’s established strengths in language and education.
