Introduction

New media and social media have dramatically transformed the political, economic, and cultural dimensions of our daily life, revolutionizing both interpersonal and mass communication and education. To meet the growing demand for innovative approaches in teaching new media and social media and nurturing relevant talents, the Academy for Educational Development and Innovation (AEDI) proposes a self-funded postgraduate programme: the Master of Arts in New Media and Social Media. This programme will integrate communication theory and media studies, equipping students to apply media knowledge and skills in real-world contexts, thereby enhancing communication strategies and fostering inclusive environments. Special emphasis will be placed on exploring the impact of new media, including generative artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. This focus aims to address the diverse educational needs prevalent in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and beyond. This programme also received strong support from different industry stakeholders including the renowned corporates, media, and experts & scholars, etc.

 

Bridging New Media with Generative AI and Education Studies
  • The new programme is unique in bridging conventional communication and media studies with Generative AI study and Education Studies, two vital areas that equip students to become professionals, educators, or researchers in the rapidly evolving digital landscape. The programme aims to enhance students' new media literacy in both AI and digital education, enabling them to thrive and prepare for an increasingly complex future as multidisciplinary experts. emphasizes emerging new media technologies, including AI, XR (VR/AR/MR), social media, and mobile media, and their importance in non-western contexts.

 

Become New Media Leaders, Unlocking Diverse Future Career Potentials!

The programme also aims to unlock or advance personal potentals to become future New Media Leaders :

  1. New Media professionals, working in governmental, cultural and business institutions, applying new media theories and skills in social media content creation and management, branding and public relations strategies.
  2. Online reporters, editors and producers: work in news organizations and production companies, reporting news and producing new media content online to meet the needs of online audiences.
  3. Social media analysts/researchers: can pursue a more analytical and research-oriented career, analyzing social media users' engagement, identifying online users' habits and suggesting methods to reach a broader audience. They might also offer consultation services for educational institutions, guiding marketing strategies.
  4. Academia or advanced study: may choose to further their studies with a Ph.D. or take up positions as lecturers or research associates in universities.   

Participants

  • The prospective applicants in Hong Kong, Mainland China and beyond. The programme aims to attract applicants like university graduates who are keenly interested in working in new media industry, or currently employed media professionals, social media content creators and teachers who wish to advance their understanding of the latest technologies and development of new media industry.
Programme structure and Curriculum

The MA(NMSM) is a 24-credit-point (cp) programme comprising 8 courses. Each course carries 3 cps. Students must complete 4 core courses and 4 elective courses.

Programme Aims and Objectives
  1. Equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge of new media and communication for daily application;  
  2. Develop students’ critical thinking and analytical skills to evaluate new media technologies;  
  3. Enhance students’ professional competence and confidence to design and implement effective communication strategies and personalized learning methods that cater to diverse learners and future leaders;  
  4. Foster students’ curiosity and creativity to explore the potential and limitations of new media and social media. 
  5. Promote the creation of inclusive and equitable media and educational environments that respect the diversity of individuals’ cognitive, emotional, and social needs, both within the context of Hong Kong and Mainland China, and with the global scopes.

Tuition fee

HK$180,000 per annum

(for the 2025/26 academic year, provisional and subject to adjustment)

 

The University reserves the right to make changes to tuition fee without prior notice. Tuition fees paid are normally not refundable or transferable. Extension fees will be charged to students who have to extend their studies beyond the normative period of study (i.e. 1 year for full-time).

General Admission Requirements
  • Recognised Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualifications.

  • Applicants from institutions where English is not the medium of instruction are required to demonstrate English proficiency that meets our established standards. This proficiency will be evaluated during the interview process. 
  • Priority will be given to applicants who have achieved excellent scores in the recognized English proficiency tests. Details will be announced.
  • Overall language requirement for admission may be subject to adjustment.
